Last Sunday, day students had the opportunity to contribute to the Milton community through a day of community service. The trip involved spending an afternoon playing games and entertaining retirees at the Marina Bay Atria Elder’s Residency (an assisted living facility in North Quincy) and was organized cooperatively by the Day Council and the Community Engagement Board.
The first day of its kind, the Day Council hoped that the Day of Day Student Service would encourage a connection for day students between school and service. Zaki Alaoui (I), one of the Day Monitors, said that the Day Council felt that boarders have many opportunities to participate in community engagement events through Milton Academy, while most day students who do service do so outside of school. Everyone at the meeting of the Council seemed to agree that getting day students to be more engaged with the school and the surrounding community was a primary goal.
Although only seven people attended the event, those who participated said that even that was more than enough to make it a worthwhile experience, especially given the size of the venue. Both Alaoui and Abby Hanly (I), the other Day Monitor, said that they hope that for the next Day of Day Student Service, they can accommodate more students and volunteers.
Overall, Day Council was pleased with how the day turned out, saying the activities were entertaining for both the elders and the volunteers. Though nothing is set in stone, they hope to hold another similar event in the future—perhaps even another this year. The Day Monitors also expressed optimism that the Day Monitors are next year will continue this newly minted tradition and continue find ways for as many day students as possible to be involved in both their community and their school.
